Rangoli
Rangoli is a form of Hindu folk art that originated in India. Traditionally believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and to act as a festive and beautiful decoration, designs and patterns are outlined on the floor or ground in chalk or coloured powder, then embellished with a variety of naturally coloured rice, sand, flour and flower petals. Usually geometric and curvilinear, they often contain animal and floral motifs, following strong links to nature. They serve many purposes other than festive decoration – they reflect Indian tradition and folklore, are a form of creative expression, they might be a form of self-portrait, or portraits of others. For many, they are a welcome symbol for the Hindu deities of the corresponding holiday and thus a means through which important teachings can be passed from generation to generation. With the ease of travel within India and mingling of cultures, modern Rangoli is often a mixture of all of the different styles that emerged from the individual Indian states and regions, along with individual flairs of the artist.
