Smoking Cessation

In 1992 New Scientist Magazine published the results of an extensive clinical study on the most effective methods of quitting smoking. A meta-analysis, statistically combining the results of more than 600 studies (over 72,000 individual cases) showed that hypnotherapy increased a smoker’s success chances from 6% to 60%

These are the research based success rates from the above study for different smoking cessation methods:

  • 60% – Single session Hypnosis
  • 24% – Acupuncture
  • 6% – Willpower alone
  • 4% – Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Hypnotherapy has been approved for use by the UK Government and by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). CBT is also an independently researched and proven therapy, similarly approved by NICE. Hypnotherapy also plays a large role in many organised and supported Stop-Smoking programs, including those supported by local NHS Stop-Smoking clinics.

What form does a session take?

The session will take around 80 minutes. Every client’s needs and circumstances are different I will address your particular needs and work out how best to help you. The CBT portion of the session will address the thinking processes which control and permit the urge to smoke and your willpower to stop. Methods will be discussed to be put into practice when those urges occur. During the hypnotherapy time you will be invited to make yourself comfortable and will be guided into a deeper state where you are more open to positive suggestion and where effective changes to your thoughts, feelings and behaviours can be made by you. Before the end of the session you will be taught how to take yourself into hypnosis as well as how to deal with any cravings, and you will be provided with a specially recorded, instructional hypnosis CD.

There are many Hypnotherapists who will "guarantee success" in one session. It can work in one session. However, I would rather have 2-3 sessions to follow up, tweak any glitches, strengthen your resolve and polish your self-skills. Relapse is the greatest enemy of a non-smoker and success rates of any method are naturally influenced by this unknown factor. I don't want you to quit for a month, I want you to quit forever, and have the knowledge and skills to do so. Attendance at the follow-up sessions is not necessary if you, the client, don't feel it is necessary.

Only you can make to decision to stop smoking and that’s something you have to do to make this work.

Hypnotherapy can never make anyone do anything that they don’t want to do. It reinforces your own desire to change and the knowledge and skills that we will customise for you in your sessions. Providing that you really want to stop and you are willing to stick at it, I will be happy to work with you to help you to become a non-smoker and to achieve long-term success.

Commitment is the key

I have been asked why a course to stop smoking is comparatively expensive. The answer is quite simple:

The money you spend to quit smoking should be significant enough to help to motivate you to maintain your resolve if the temptation to smoke again occurs.

Having said that, the cost of this course is approximately the same as 2 cartons of cigarettes so when you consider the amount of money you will save by not smoking, it represents extremely good value for money!
